Private Equity funds invest in privately held companies. The ownership stake on such firms are not traded in the public stock market and since they are privately held, they do not have to file financial statements with the SEC. Though generally private investors intend to hold their positions over the long-term, private equity stakes can be traded directly from one private investor to another in an OTC transaction. You can call such an OTC market a private equity market.
